Workshops and Training
Finesse is well known for its extended written documentation. In addition, we regularly offer and organise training sessions for members of the scientific community to support the training of new people and the development and use of advanced models.
Some of the workshops organised to use Finesse, for example for optical design or commissioning of existing detectors:
- Modeling Virgo with |Finesse| 3, 18–22 Aug 2025
This workshop brought together commissioners and Finesse developers to collaboratively model the Virgo interferometer using Finesse 3. It focused on simulating the O4 configuration to support current commissioning and on advancing O5 modeling, laying the groundwork for future upgrades.
- Finesse3 for supporting Virgo, 12–16 Aug 2024`
Dedicated event to support the Virgo team in bridging the transition from Finesse 2 to Finesse 3, while contributing to the design of stable recycling cavities for the next Virgo upgrade. In addition, we promoted the use of the official channels for communication.
- IUCAA Finesse Workshop and Hackathon, 18-22 December 2019
Introducing Finesse for gravitational-wave detector design and characterisation. This workshop marks the start of an extended training programme for young scientists associated with IUCAA.
- Interferometer modeling and Finesse Workshop, 27-30 August 2019
A workshop and hackathon dedicated to the development of Finesse 3, supported by the Royal Society and the Wolfson Foundation and hosted at the Institute of Gravitational Wave Astronomy at the University of Birmingham.

- Summer School at the Beijing Normal University, 10-14 July 2017
A week-long Summer School on Gravitational Waves given at Beijing Normal University by Daniel Brown and Andreas Freise, with a special focus on using Finesse.
- Simulation Workshop at the 73rd Scottish Universities Summer School in Physics, 28 July 2017
A one-day Modelling workshop at the 73rd Scottish Universities Summer School in Physics.
- Optical simulation workshop, December 2016
Optics simulation workshop at the ‘LIGO-India: The road ahead’ meeting in December 2016 at IUCAA Pune.
